Karma’s respect and devotion for His Holiness are legendary. Chenrezig with Dalai Lama is a gorgeous painting that incorporates many of Karma’s styles. Karma’s great reverence for His Holiness the Dalai Lama is evident in the design of this piece. Tibetan women and attendant Lamas pay homage to His Holiness. Even the wallabies seem to be bowing in reverence. Chenrezig floats in the sky above His Holiness. It is said that the Dalai Lama is an incarnation of Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of the compassion of all the Buddhas. Here again, one finds references to both Australia, with the birds and the wallabies, and to Tibet, with the offering shells, jewels, dorje and bell, and the lotus. With each dot Karma says a mantra, imbuing the painting with meditative energy. The dots are also a tribute to his adopted country, Australia, by this refugee from Tibet.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Karma Phuntsok is a pioneer of Tibetan contemporary art and one of the few Tibetan artists who directly experienced the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959. After escaping to India, Karma studied traditional Tibetan thangka painting for several years. In the 1970's, he began to explore new techniques and materials, interweaving modern with traditional symbols. Karma's paintings are now held in public and private collections around the world. As one of today's most influential artists, Karma has also paved the way for others, both Tibetan and non-Tibetan, seeking new ways to combine traditional Tibetan iconography with contemporary work.
