Medicine Buddha by Karma Phuntsok, Healing, Thangka Art, Contemporary, Buddhist art, Tibetan Art, Karma

The Medicine Buddha is a serene healing Buddha who removes physical, mental and emotional ailments. He is described as the doctor who cures dukkha, or suffering. The Medicine Buddha is depicted as having a dark blue (lapis lazuli) colored body. With his left hand he holds a bowl of healing nectar, and with his right hand a healing plant or myrobalan.

This Medicine Buddha floats above his lotus seat on a luminous abstract background filled with tiny dots that create his body halo. Before his lotus are offerings of the endless knot and the eight-faceted flaming jewel, symbolic of the Noble Eightfold Path. As Karma paints, he repeats a mantra with each dot infusing the entire piece with conscious healing energy.

Karma Phuntsok is a pioneer of Tibetan contemporary art and one of the few Tibetan artists who directly experienced the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959. After escaping to India, Karma studied traditional Tibetan thangka painting for several years. In the 1970's, he began to explore new techniques and materials, interweaving modern with traditional symbols. Karma's paintings are now held in public and private collections around the world. As one of today's most influential artists, Karma has also paved the way for others, both Tibetan and non-Tibetan, seeking new ways to combine traditional Tibetan iconography with contemporary work.
